Do not pack them immediately after rain
Remove wet cushions from the furniture and inspect both sides, seams and zip areas. Moisture can remain there when the sun-facing surface already feels dry. Position the cushions according to their care instructions so air can reach damp areas. A tightly stacked pile dries differently from cushions spread separately.
The best position is not necessarily the strongest direct sunshine. Colour, filling and cover may have different requirements. Read the label and avoid improvised drying against heaters. If covers are removable, check whether and how they can be dried separately. A zip does not automatically mean that the complete cushion is machine washable.
Fit storage to everyday use
For daily use, choose somewhere you can reach quickly when rain begins. Measure the actual cushions, including their thickness, before selecting a box. Packing them tightly can distort some fillings and make removal awkward. The lid should close without forcing the cushions down, and the box must not obstruct a necessary route.
A storage product intended for outdoor use is not automatically waterproof in every situation. Check its description, intended placement and ventilation. Water may enter at exposed points while condensation forms inside. Inspect the contents after weather changes rather than relying entirely on a closed lid.
Compare two storage positions by imagining a wet afternoon. A large outdoor box holds every cushion but is reached through a narrow gap. A smaller dry compartment just inside the balcony door may need two trips yet open comfortably. Capacity is not the only measure. Test whether you can operate the lid while holding a cushion and where the cushion rests during that movement. This short rehearsal shows whether the system works spontaneously or whether damp pads will end up on the floor.
Before a longer break
Remove loose dirt and clean only as the care instructions permit. Cushions must be completely dry before longer-term storage. Mark matching covers if you own several similar sets. A note identifying their furniture saves trying every cushion when the next season begins.
Choose a suitable dry location and arrange the cushions so they retain their shape. Do not stack heavy tools or plant pots on top. Check them occasionally, especially if temperature changes can make the storage area damp. Investigate unusual smells or visible changes before returning a cushion to use.
A quick weather check before leaving home can make the daily routine easier. The important part is a system that fits your balcony: a few cushions with an accessible dry storage place can be more convenient than a large set with nowhere suitable to go. Measure the route to that place too, so a bulky cushion can pass through the door without brushing wet foliage.
