Herb pots on a kitchen windowsill

Kitchen herbs need a suitable position and care matched to each species.

Assess the sill as a plant location

A herb pot beside the worktop is convenient, but proximity to cooking does not replace suitable light. Observe the direct light reaching the sill and whether an overhang or neighbouring building shades it. Choose herbs according to their requirements. Different species will not perform equally well on the same kitchen windowsill.

Check temperature and window use too. A pot should not be knocked over when airing the room. Immediately beside hot appliances or in frequent cold draughts may be unsuitable. Keep plants away from splashes and cleaning products without giving up the light they need.

Consider each species separately

Basil, mint and Mediterranean herbs do not automatically share water and environmental needs. Look up the particular species and keep its identification. A decorative shared container can complicate care if it makes every plant receive the same watering. Separate inner pots allow individual checks and adjustment.

Check the growing medium before watering. Its surface does not always describe the entire pot. Weight and moisture in the accessible upper layer can together give a more useful impression. Water according to the plant's needs and let surplus drain away. A decorative outer pot should not unnoticed become a permanently filled reservoir.

Harvest within the plant's capacity

Take small amounts initially and check which parts should be harvested from that species. A small purchased pot does not supply unlimited fresh leaves. If large quantities are needed regularly, a larger or renewed supply is more realistic than repeatedly stripping the same small plant.

While harvesting, inspect for dry or damaged parts and changes in growth. Keep the saucer clean and the sill dry. If growth declines, review light, watering and species requirements first. More water alone is not a universal response. A kitchen windowsill becomes useful when harvesting and care match the plant actually growing there. Convenience for the cook and suitable conditions for the herb both need to be present.
