Working at home

A compact bureau instead of a desk

A bureau saves space when closed, but must accommodate the work when open.

Distinguish closed and open dimensions

A narrow bureau can look unobtrusive in a living room. In use, however, the open flap depth and chair space matter. Mark both conditions on the floor. Check whether the working position blocks a passage or cupboard door. Shallow closed dimensions help only when the open arrangement also functions.

Lay the actual equipment on the proposed surface. A laptop may fit while the mouse, hands and documents have nowhere useful to go. Watch for small internal compartments that reduce the available depth. They provide storage but may occupy exactly the area where the display needs to stand.

Test the flap with the seat

The open flap must be intended for the planned use and adequately stable. Follow the manufacturer's loading and operating instructions. A decorative writing surface is not automatically suitable for every device or a clamped monitor arm. Check whether hardware projects into the leg space or is touched while seated.

Use the intended chair at the bureau. Arms, seat height and the front edge determine how closely you can approach it. The chair also needs somewhere to go after the bureau closes. If it remains in the middle of the room every day, the storage idea has only partly solved the space problem.

Close without trapping anything

Route cables as permitted by the furniture and equipment. No lead should become caught between flap and carcass when closing. Do not operate devices inside a closed compartment if that prevents their manufacturer's requirements being met, particularly ventilation and heat clearance. A closed front does not make unsuitable operation acceptable.

Try the transition from working to closed furniture with every object present. Do notebooks need removing, and where will they go? Does the keyboard fit the intended compartment? If each evening involves a complicated rearrangement, a small open desk may be easier to live with. A bureau works when closing it remains a simple action rather than merely concealing clutter behind a crowded flap.
