Establish the work area below first
Place the screen and lamp in their useful positions before deciding shelf height. A shelf can obstruct an adjustable lamp arm or force the display too low. Mark the proposed lower edge on the wall with paper and inspect the arrangement while seated and standing.
Include the movement of standing up. The front edge should not occupy the space your head passes through when leaning forward or rising. A deep shelf provides more storage but also projects farther into the working area. Compare height and depth together. A narrow board may hold the required books without becoming a low overhang above the desk.
Plan load and fixing specifically
List what will stand on the shelf. Books and files create a different load from a few light objects. Capacity depends on the shelf, supports, fixings and wall. A rating for only one component does not establish that the complete installation is suitable.
Use attachments intended for the particular system and substrate. Check for services before drilling and obtain competent help if uncertain. Above a regularly occupied workstation, an improvised mounting is not a sensible shortcut. Continue observing the manufacturer's limits when more books are added later, rather than treating the initial installation as the final load.
Match reach to frequency
Frequently used documents should be accessible without reaching awkwardly over the display. If retrieving them requires climbing onto the chair, they are in the wrong place. Rarely used items can sit higher but still need safe access. A wheeled working chair is not a suitable step.
Do not casually place heavy or easily tipped objects at the front edge. Check whether books need appropriate side support. Leave extraction space instead of filling every compartment completely. A file that can be removed only after shifting several neighbours does not provide quick access. It merely moves the clutter from the desk to the wall. Review what is actually retrieved before adding another shelf.
