Prepare after a trip
Empty every compartment and check small pockets. Remove food remnants and anything not intended to stay in the case. Clean the shell, wheels and interior only by methods suitable for the material. Textile, leather and hard-shell care are not interchangeable.
Let the case dry completely before closing it or placing it in a cover. Moisture in folds or padding may remain after the outer surface feels dry. Deal with damaged wheels, handles or closures early so repairs are not discovered immediately before departure.
Measure the handles too
Include wheels, fixed carrying handles and projecting sections. A case whose shell just fits a compartment may still catch at the handle. Consider how it will come out again. A high position is considerably more awkward for heavy filled luggage than for a light empty bag.
Stand or lay the case according to its construction and care guidance. A dry indoor area may be easier to monitor than a damp ancillary room. Assess actual conditions and avoid unnecessary pressure from heavy objects stacked above it.
Consider nesting carefully
Different sizes can sometimes fit inside one another. Check that the inner case does not press against lining, zips or the outer shell. Wheels and hard edges should not damage delicate surfaces. Appropriate protective separation may be necessary where compatible with the materials.
Space saving has an access cost: the outer case must be opened and perhaps emptied whenever the inner one is needed. Frequent users of the smaller model should include that sequence in the decision. The largest case is not automatically the most convenient everyday storage place for the smallest.
Limit stored contents deliberately
Travel accessories may stay inside if clean, dry and suitable for the location. A short contents note can prevent buying adapters or packing pouches again. Important documents and everyday belongings should not disappear into difficult-to-reach luggage.
Open rarely used cases periodically to inspect them. A regular position helps only while condition and contents remain known. The next journey starts more easily when the case is ready rather than first requiring an unidentified collection to be emptied from it.
