Check the folded dimensions before buying
A folding chair is not automatically flat or light when closed. Compare its actual packed dimensions, including projecting hardware. Measure the intended storage place and the route to it. A narrow cupboard is of little use if the furniture cannot pass around a corner or through its door.
Where possible, try the folding operation yourself. The locking mechanism should operate as instructed without uncontrolled movement. Use the intended grip points. Furniture requiring considerable force or a second person may not suit a daily changeover on a small balcony.
Separate seasonal storage from daily folding
Storage for an entire winter can be organised differently from a chair folded every evening. Rarely used pieces may sit farther back where they remain safely accessible. For a daily change, keep the grip clear and avoid another heavy item in front. Decide how often the furniture actually moves before arranging the storage.
Keep loose cushions or connecting parts clearly associated with it. A small labelled compartment avoids searching during the next setup. Store care and assembly information nearby so the correct locking procedure remains clear after a long break.
Store it clean and dry
Remove dirt according to the care instructions and let the furniture dry before longer storage. Damp cushions should not go into a closed bag merely because the bag looks weatherproof. Check the requirements separately for frame, fabric and padding, as they may differ.
A cover does not automatically replace a suitable storage location. Follow its intended use and avoid trapping unwanted moisture. The furniture manufacturer may recommend protected indoor storage. Decide from those instructions rather than from the general word outdoor on a sales label. Different outdoor materials can require different treatment during extended periods out of use.
Keep stored furniture accessible
Position folded pieces so they cannot readily fall and do not obstruct necessary routes. A wall support must suit the weight and substrate. Do not lean several heavy pieces together in a way that causes the whole stack to move when the first item is removed.
Place frequently used chairs ahead of occasional pieces. Some clearance from the floor can make cleaning easier where the chosen support is intended for that arrangement. When setting the furniture out again, inspect hardware, locks and condition according to the instructions. Space-saving furniture still needs to be fully opened and safely usable. Leaving it partly folded is not an acceptable compromise merely because the balcony has become crowded.
